Research activities

  • Interactions between plants and microorganisms, associative bacteria and particularly arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi
  • Characterization of hydrogen metabolism and dinitrogen fixation in cyanobacteria. Molecular analysis of the bidirectional hydrogenase and of alternative, Vanadium or iron only containing nitrogenases. Investigations on their role in natural habitats
  • Population analysis of the bacterial communities in soils by molecular techniques like t-RFLP analysis or direct cloning and sequencing. Genes of interest: 16S-rDNA, for dinitrogen fixation: nifH, for denitrification: nosZ, nirS and nirK
  • Investigations on salt and heavy metal tolerance of plants

Teaching activities

  • Lecturing in general botany and microbiology, particularly primary metabolism
  • Botanical excursions for beginners and advanced students, also for interested amateurs particularly in the vicinity of Cologne and to regions in the Alps

I. Experienced stamp collector, participation at several stamp exhibitions with awards

b) The development of the German postage after both world wars
c) The element nitrogen in the philatelic world (posters only)

I am always interested in finding serious stamp collectors for exchanging. I can offer Germany and other Western European countries. My main interest is in receiving stamps on letters, postcards, stationary, also mint stamps.

  • Wechselwirkungen zwischen Pflanzen und Mikroorganismen: Assoziative Bakterien und besonders arbuskuläre Mykorrhiza-Pilze
