The Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) supports
the Botanical Institute of the University of Cologne with 546.000 Euro.
The team headed by Professor Ulf-Ingo Flügge is part of the "BETAMORPHOSIS" consortium to achieve an increase in yield and sugar content in sugar beet. By modification of metabolic processes in leaves and taproots it is aimed at simultaneously increasing both the export of photoassimilates from leaves and the storage of sugars in taproots.
