I am interested in studying function of segmentally duplicated genes and/or gene families. Segmental duplication play an important role in evolution as they are plastic regions of rapid structural change, chromosomal instability and rearrangement. Moreover, gene duplications are considered to be a mechanism to increase the diversity of the gene families.

Understanding the function of the duplicated gene and/or families are crucial because survival and therefore selection of a species depends on the ability to fight with infectious agants and environmental changes.

Currently, I am analyzing the function of Morpheus and LRRC37 gene family that are segmentally duplicated.

PhD

Supervisor/ Institute

Prof. Dr. Jonathan C. Howard/ Institute of Genetics

Title of the thesis:

Evolutionary and functional studies of p47 GTPases involved in cell autonomous immunity

Thesis committee

Prof. Dr Jonathan Howard and Prof Dr. Diethard Tautz

Date of defense

14. February 2006

Field of studies

The p47 GTPases gene family is documented down to the mouse, human, dog, rat and bony fishes. The dramatic gain and loss of the family member is shown in these ancient taxonomic groups. The clear distinction between mouse and human immune system in regards to cell autonomous immunity is discovered.
