1951-1958 studies at the universities of Göttingen and Tübingen;
1958 Dr. rer. nat., Zool. Departm. Univ. Göttingen (promotors: Karl
Henke, Hans Piepho); 1958-1962 research assistent at the ‘MPI für
Meeresbiologie’ in Wihelmshaven (Laboratory of Experim. Ecology: Karl Strenzke)
and 1962-1967 at the Zool. Departm. Univ. Würzburg (Section Developm.
Physiology: Gerhard Krause); there qualification as university lecturer
in 1964; 1967-1997 full-professor for zoology, especially for physiological
ecology, at the Zool. Departm. Univ. Köln; since then professor emeritus
at the same department. Since 1982 member of the ‘Nordrhein-Westfälische
Akademie der Wissenschaften’ in Düsseldorf.
Further activities followed: member of expert-groups of the
German Science Foundation (since 1980), member of the ‘Wiss. Beirat’ of
the ‘Institut für Vogelforschung’ in Wilhelmshaven (since 1991), chairman
of the Alexander Koenig Foundation of the ‘Zoologisches Forschungsinstitut
und Museum Koenig’ in Bonn (since 1996), chairman of the ‘Wiss. Beirat
zum Wanderfischprogramm of the ‘Ministerium für Umwelt, Raumordnung
und Landwirtschaft’ in Nordrhein-Westfalen (since 1998), board member of
the ‘Naturschutzzentrum im Kreis Kleve e.V.’ (since 1999).
Research interests:
Chronobiology (lunar and tidal rhythmicities), Limnic Ecophysiology
(limiting conditions of macrozoobenthos), Ecology of Running Waters (connections
with dredged lakes, reintroduction of migrating salmonids, interstitial
conditions), Art History (Far Eastern paintings).
