Impact of fungal colonization of leaf litter for the litter breakdown by amphipod shredders.
Leaf litter enters lakes seasonally from riparian vegetation and is primarily broken down by shredders. From stream and laboratory studies, it is known that gammarids prefer leaves colonized with fungi over unconditioned leaves. For gammarids, the dietary value of those leaves increases during decomposition with fungal colonization. The aim of my project is to investigate the impact of fungi and oomycetes, which are involved in leaf litter degradation, and their extracts for the food preference of Gammarus roeselii, an important shredder in the littoral of Lake Constance.
