Fig. 1a, b: The zooxanthellate scleractinian coral Leptoseris fragilis - lacking tentacles - lives in depths between 90 and 145 m. The external body wall is perforated by pores with a diameter of 1-2 µm through which the coelenteron communicates with the surrounding water. Water entering the coelenteron through the mouth leaves the body through the pores. This flow-through system improves the retention and accumulation of micro-POM. Scale bars: in a) 8.6 µm; in b) 3 µm
