Fig. 2a, b: The zooxanthellate scleratinian coral Mycedium elephantotus - lacking tentacles - is particularly abundant at depths between 20 and 40 m. The collection and accumulation of food particles in the mucus nets and filaments and the subsequent incorporation through the mouth openings into the coelenteron is shown. Diameter of the white spots in Fig 2a = 5 mm.
