Research

The research section comprises a clinical and a laboratory division within the Department of Dental Materials. Both divisions are closely related through dental material, technological and biological research activities. The cooperation of other medical institutes of the Cologne University Clinics provides for a widened research spectrum.
The different in-vitro simulations are used to test material related parameters, such as abrasion, bending resistance, hardness und fatigue of dental materials. The main goal is to determine the mechanisms by which the long-term behavior of the materials is determined. Since all materials placed within the oral cavity will be subjected to constant mechanical, thermal and bacteriological impacts, their resistance to wear and biologically active substances are most crucially considered. The ultimate aim of the experiments is the optimization of dental materials to provide long-term serviceability within the oral cavity.

The prospective clinical studies aim at testing the suitability of different dental materials for placement within the oral environment. The clinical situation is assessed by experienced dentists and evaluated through preset guidelines and standardized evaluation criteria.
