Afrikanistik, as a discipline
Afrikanistik studies languages, literature, history as well as cultures of Africa.
The analysis and description of African languages is the main focus in research and teaching of this discipline.
The study of African languages allows access to the rich African literature, as well as to the history and cultures of the African continent. Language reconstruction and comparative linguistic methods are applied to reach a better understanding of the early history of the African continent. Sociolinguistics and language policy are further fields of study.
