Beate Neumeier is Professor and Chair of English at the University of Cologne. After studies at the University of Würzburg and the University of Manchester, she received her PhD and Habiliation degree at Würzburg. She previously taught at the Universities of Würzburg and Potsdam, and held guest professorships at Vanderbilt University (Tenn.) and the University of Miss. at Oxford. As part of her research interests in Gender Studies she updates the annual Gender-Inn internet bibliography and edits the electronic journal Gender Forum. Within the Erasmus scheme she established regular project-related faculty exchanges with the Centre for Critical Studies at the University of Wales in Cardiff. She also entertains an intensive collaboration with colleagues from Mumbai University and Kachchh University in the field of Indian culture, theatre and film. To complement classroom discussions on British theatre she organizes regular field trips to London and Stratford. In a joint project of English department colleagues, she was instrumental in setting up a DAAD sponsored Chair for Australian and Indigenous Studies at Cologne. Major areas of her research are the English Renaissance, Anglophone Theatre and Gender Studies. Currently she spends her sabbatical in Beijing, affiliated with Peking University and the University of International Business and Economics, collecting data on "Focus on China: Engendering Performance Arts”.
