Linguistics and Phonetics in Cologne

As one of the largest universities in Germany, the university of Cologne has an exceptionally vast number of offerings in linguistic studies.

The Department of Linguistics houses four originally separate institutes that study large areas of linguistics. Each of these institutes is represented on their own website:

• General Linguistics
• Historical-Comparative Linguistics
• Phonetics
• Linguistic Data Processing

The consolidation of these departments in 2003 established the Department of Linguistics, forming an interdisciplinarily conceived as well as internationally competent basis for the research of language and languages. The interdisciplinary orientation is evident in the Bachelor program Linguistik und Phonetik (LuP). Linguistic Data Processing is a module of the B.A. program Linguistik und Phonetik (LuP) and is also a component of another study track Informationsverarbeitung. Historical-Comparative Linguistics can also be studied within framework of the track Antike Sprachen und Kulturen (ASuK).
