Profile of Linguistics and Phonetics in Cologne

The Department of Linguistics is characterized by its engagement in methodologically and thematically large areas of linguistic theories and phenomena:

  • language typology
  • documentation and description of endangered languages (fieldwork)
  • (intercultural) communication
  • pragmatics and discourse analysis
  • prosody and intonation
  • articulatory modelling
  • experimental phonology
  • Indo-European languages
  • language comparison and reconstruction
  • computational linguistics

As the basis for communication, language is embedded in a social and cultural context. Additionally to the description and explanation of structural phenomena, language research must also incorporate – both for scientific and practical reasons – phenomena such as communication objectives and effects, language variation determined by society, language change etc.
