RRZK offers a wide range of free software available to students and staff members. If you wish to know which software licenses are available, please contact your department's consultant.

There are four ways to use licensed software:

Obtaining a software license,
permits a department to use one or more copies of the licensed software on its PCs. The RRZK offers a variety of software that can be purchased for about 10%-60% of the original license price. Especially statistics software and the well-established products of Microsoft and Word Perfect should be of interest.

Software and file server,
enables the user to run software on a local PC. The PC must be connected to the UKLAN via a LAN connection. If the PC is properly configured, the program can be directly executed. When using UNIX, all software is available through AFS. Windows PCs at RRZK-B are connected to a windows server that provides all necessary software. Apple MacIntosh computers connect to server "Ethershare".

"Classic" way with a dedicated computer,
programs are available as binary files and can be run only on a specific computer or on one of a predefined set of computers. This applies to all UNIX software for statistics and the database system Ingres. Windows multimedia software is also installed only on dedicated "multimedia PCs" at RRZK-B.

through a FTP-server (free software),
free and shareware programs are available for everyone on our anonymous FTP-server. LINUX or UNIX programs obtained this way may need to be compiled first.

License management

Most of the software systems are available only to a limited number of concurrent users. When using software licensed in this way you may sometimes receive this error message:

Keine weiteren Lizenzen des Programms ... verfügbar. (No licenses of ... available at this time)

When this happens please be patient and try again later. Should the software system be unavailable repeatedly, please contact us (soft@rrz.uni-koeln.de). Some programs are only available to registered users.
