Notes on data, analysis and

Compiled and adapted by Sophie Simmonds from the following base maps:

compilation:

1) National Soil Survey (phase 1) 1:1 million scale, 1998-2000. Reference: ICC/MAWRD 2000; Project to Support the

Agro-Ecological Zoning Programme (AEZ) in Namibia. Cooperation Project between the Ministry of Agriculture,

Water and Rural Development of Namibia, the Cartographic Institute of Catalonia and the Spanish Agency for

International Cooperation, Main Report, 243pp. Annexes, 224 pp. 79 maps.

2) Soil Map of the Etosha National Park (Beugler-Bell, H. and Buch, M.W.; 1997). In Soils and Soil Erosion in the

Etosha National Park, Northern Namibia; Madoqua 1997.

3) SWA/Namibia Geological Map 1:1 000 000. Geological Survey of the Republic of South Africa and South West Africa

(1980).

Reclassification: The main sources of data, maps produced by the National Soil Survey 1998-2000, were originally

compiled using the World Reference Base (WRB, 1998) to classify soils to the level of soil sub-units. To facilitate

correlations with other sources of data on Namibian soils, the WRB taxonomic units were re-classified to the

FAO/UNESCO/ISRIC Revised Legend (1988) using general principles and nomenclature recommended by FAO (1990).

Where soil complexes and associations were indicated, these were left intact. The FAO Revised Legend (1988) does not

specify a protocol for the description of soil complexes per se, although provision is made for the notation of soil associations.
