An Environment for Statistics and Graphics

A few words about S, S-Plus and R:

At the end of the 70s the interactive programming language S for statistical and graphical applications had been developped at the Bell Labs from AT&T. At first S had been free available under Unix. Some years later S had been commercialized: S got a graphical user interface (and hence easier to use), was made available for other platforms (esp. Windows) und numerous functions and modules were developped. This was marketted under the name of S-Plus ("value added version of S"). For more information see Product information at Insightful.

Since 1993 the original version S has been made available under the name of R as a open source project and has been enhanced. The project was initiated at the Carnegie Mellon Univerity. The R project which envolves about 500 persons all over the world, has its home meanwhile at the university of Vienna. In principle any R program runs also under S, and of course vice versa. Therefore the introductions below, especially those concerning the programming language S, are valid also for R. For more information see What is R.
