R / S-Plus
An Environment for Statistics and Graphics
A few words about S, S-Plus and R:
At the end of the 70s the
interactive programming language S for statistical and graphical applications
had been developped at the Bell Labs from AT&T. At first S had been free
available under Unix. Some years later S had been commercialized: S got a
graphical user interface (and hence easier to use), was made available for
other platforms (esp. Windows) und numerous functions and modules were
developped. This was marketted under the name of S-Plus ("value added version
of S"). For more information see
Product information at Insightful.
Since 1993 the
original version S has been made available under the name of R as a open source
project and has been enhanced. The project was initiated at the Carnegie Mellon
Univerity. The R project which envolves about 500 persons all over the world,
has its home meanwhile at the university of Vienna. In principle any R program
runs also under S, and of course vice versa. Therefore the introductions below,
especially those concerning the programming language S, are valid also for R.
