Maja Gilardone, 11.9.1917, to Olaf Fønss

In her letter, Maja Gilardone mentions a photograph that she has enclosed, but which is no longer part of the letter today. However, a picture of a ›Maja‹ with the same handwriting can be found in a different section of the Olaf Fønss collection called ›Olaf Fønss' letters of admiration and greeting cards‹ (no. 8). So this is what the 17-year-old fan looked like.

Lieber Herr Fönss!

Schon so lange ist es mir ein Herzensbedürfnis Ihnen zu schreiben wie sehr ich Sie verehre. Seit ich den schönen gewaltigen Film Homunculus gesehen. Ihr vollendet schönes Spiel, ich war ganz ergriffen. Den bedeutenden Film »Das jüngste Gericht« und den lieben »Papa X.« erinnere ich mich so gern und oft Ihrer.

Ich habe sämmtliche Photographien von Ihnen [in] allen Stellungen in meinem Album und Sie sind mir dadurch so vertraut. Ich sehne mich schon jetzt daß ich mal in nächster Zeit wieder Ihre große Kunst im Film bewundern und Ihr liebes Bild begrüßen kann.

Leider werden nur selten hier Ihre schönen Filme aufgeführt. Ich sehe Sie so gern in den Beschützerrollen die liegen Ihnen so sehr gut und glauben Sie mir meine Verehrer gefallen mir alle nicht weil ich immer nur für Sie und Ihre Kunst schwärme. Ich möchte nähmlich so gerne Schauspielerin werden und ich habe auch viel Talent.

Einige von Ihren Bildern stehen auch auf meinem Klavier.

Lieber Herr Fönss Sie werden jetzt wohl lachen über ein dummes junges 17jähriges Mädchen, aber vielleicht bleibt doch bei all Ihrer Kunst eine kleine Erinnerung für mich übrig.

Anbei sende ich Ihnen mein neuestes Bild.

Dear Mr. Fönss!

For so long now, it has been my heart's desire to write to you and tell you how much I admire you. Ever since I saw the beautiful, powerful film Homunculus. Your perfectly beautiful performance moved me deeply. I remember your important film »The End of the World« and the lovely »Daddy X.« so fondly and often.

I have all the photographs of you in all your roles in my album, and you are so familiar to me because of them. I am already longing to admire your great artistry in film again in the near future and to greet your lovely image.

Unfortunately, your beautiful films are rarely shown here. I love to see you in protective roles, they suit you so well, and believe me, I don't like any of my admirers because I only ever rave about you and your art. I would really like to become an actress and I also have a lot of talent.

Some of your pictures are also on my piano.

Dear Mr. Fönss, you will probably laugh at a silly 17-year-old girl, but perhaps a small memory of me will remain with all your artistry.
