Verehrter Meister,

verzeihen Sie, daß ich mich erkühne, mit der Bitte um eine Widmung an Sie heranzutreten. Es ist das erstemal, daß ich einen Künstler mit einem solchen Ansuchen belästige, da ich das »Sammeln« von Autogrammen nicht gerade für sagen wir »pietätvoll« halte; ein Autogramm ist immer noch ein wenn auch noch so kleiner Teil des Ichs einer Künstlerseele und solche zu »sammeln« empfinde ich als eine Taktlosigkeit gegen die Künstler. Wenn ich trotzdem mit dieser Bitte an Sie herantrete, so tue ich es des halb, weil Sie für mich Der Künstler, unter unserern Meistern des Filmbundes, wie Veidht, Goetzke, Kleinrogge, Obel, Tolnäs der primus inter pares sind. In dieser Beurteilung, werter Meister, bin ich ganz besonders durch Ihre Leistung in dem Meisterfilm Murnaus gekommen; »Der Gang durch die Nacht« war der Film, der den tiefsten und nachhaltigsten Eindruck auf mich machte, trotzdem ich damals noch sehr jung war, ein einziger Film hat annähernd in gleicher Weise gepackt, »Der müde Tod« mit Bernhard Goetzke. Leider habe ich schon lange keinen neuen Film, in dem Sie, verehrter Meister die Hauptrolle verkörpert hätten, gesehen und so war ich sehr erfreut in einem Wiener Filmblatt für Herbst den Film »Im Banne der ewigen Stadt« angekündigt zu sehen; (durch besondere Liebenswürdigkeit der Nordisk besitze ich schon einzelne Großphotos) als dann die »Filmwoche« berichtete, daß Sie in Berlin in »Spitzen« filmen, (Ihr werter Herr Bruder Aage Foenß hat ja vor Jahren bei der Nordisk dieselbe Rolle verkörpert) da setzte ich mich eben hin und schrieb diesen Brief. Leider sind keine neueren Aufnahmen zu haben als die beigelegte und da möchte ich bitten, eine andere, neuere Photographie zu senden.

Dear Master,

Please forgive me for taking the liberty of writing to you with a request for an autograph. This is the first time I have ever bothered an artist with such a request, as I do not exactly consider the ›collecting‹ of autographs to be, shall we say, ›respectful‹; an autograph is still a part – however small – of an artist’s soul, and I feel that ›collecting‹ them is a lack of tact toward the artists. If I nevertheless approach you with this request, it is because, to me, you are The Artist – the primus inter pares among our masters of the Film Bund, such as Veidht, Goetzke, Kleinrogge, Obel, and Tolnäs. This assessment, dear Master, stems in particular from your performance in Murnau’s masterpiece; »Der Gang durch die Nacht« [Going through the Night] was the film that made the deepest and most lasting impression on me, even though I was still very young at the time; only one other film has moved me in nearly the same way: »Destiny« with Bernhard Goetzke. Unfortunately, it has been a long time since I’ve seen a new film in which you, esteemed master, have played the leading role, and so I was very pleased to see the film »Mists of the Past« announced in a Viennese film magazine for the fall; (thanks to the special kindness of Nordisk, I already have a few large-format photos) and when »Filmwoche« reported that you are filming »Lace« in Berlin (your esteemed brother, Aage Foenß, played the same role for Nordisk years ago), I simply sat down and wrote this letter. Unfortunately, no more recent photographs are available than the one enclosed, and I would therefore like to ask you to send another, more recent photograph.

I humbly ask for your kind forbearance and remain in admiration of your great art
