Sofie Ruppert, 28.10.1919, to Olaf Fønss

The somewhat older Sofie Ruppert was surely a ›power film fan‹. She also sent a few fan letters to Clara Wieth, but her greatest film idol was apparently Olaf Fønss, to whom she wrote dozens of letters and sent quite a number of photographs from the late 1910s onward. The following letter is one of the shortest she wrote – Sofie Ruppert's letters are typically extremely verbose, characterized by redundancy and careless language, and sometimes difficult to read due to her messy handwriting. It is also typical that she likes to refer to information she has taken from film magazines (in the following example, the Nordisk Filmskompagni company magazine published in Vienna, Der Eisbär), which she apparently studied very carefully, and that she addresses Olaf Fønss as Your Excellency, a form of address typical of the hierarchical title system of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy.

Hoher Künstler!

Habe heute in der Zeitschrift "Der Eisbär" in Briefkasten Ihre neue Adresse gelesen Ich nehme an, dass Euer Hochwolgeboren meinen lezten Brief mit Beilage meines Bildes nicht erhalten haben, weil ich denselben noch an die alte Adresse richtete.

Ich habe mir erlaubt an den hohen Künstler ein solches zu senden, damit Sie sehen, wem Sie Ihr wertes Bild mit Autogramm versehen anvertraut haben. Ich bin überaus glücklich. Sie dürfen überzeugt sein, dass ich Sie hoch schätze und Sie werden mir sicher erlauben, dass ich Sie als Künstler sehe. Ich habe in einem letzten Brief den hohen Künstler gebeten, ob Sie mir erlauben hie und da Ihnen zu schreiben und um ein kleines Bild für mein Medaillon dass ich gerne bei mir tragen würde. Euer Hochwolgeboren wird mir sicher meine Bitte erfüllen.

Wenn ich Euer Hochwolgeboren bitten darf, mir nach Erhalt dieses Briefes gleich ein paar Zeilen zu kommen lassen ob Sie das Bild erhalten haben und möchte Sie freundlichst bitten um Ihre werte genaue Adresse. Erfüllen Sie mir meinen Wunsch.

I read your new address in the magazine »Der Eisbär« today. I assume that Your Excellency did not receive my last letter with my picture enclosed because I sent it to your old address.

I took the liberty of sending one to the distinguished artist so that you could see to whom you entrusted your valuable autographed picture. I am extremely happy. You may be assured that I hold you in high esteem and you will surely allow me to regard you as an artist. In a recent letter, I asked the distinguished artist whether you would allow me to write to you from time to time and request a small picture for my medallion, which I would like to carry with me. Your Excellency will surely grant my request.

If I may ask Your Excellency to send me a few lines as soon as you receive this letter to let me know whether you have received the picture, and I would kindly ask you for your exact address. Please grant my wish.
