The East Asian Seminar of Cologne University is housing the departments of Japanology (Japanese Philology) and Sinology and Manchu Philology which have been supplemented in 1989 by the department of Regional Studies / China.
The reading room of the seminar's library is located on the 4th floor at 56 - 60 Dürener Strasse. The library is a reading library, i.e. you may not check out our books, but you may do your research in one of the 50 working areas we have set up in the upper part of the reading room.
The cataloquing of the entire stock of books of the Regional Studies / China is done by Computer. A PC is available in the reading room for your queries. If you are not familiar with our software (LIDOS), please join our introduction courses held at the beginning of each term.
The books of the Japanese department are currently being indexed. Their shelves (in the right hand-side of the reading room) are sorted according to subjects. Furthermore a filing card system is set up by computer.
Prior to 1992 the department of Sinology and Manchu
Philology has exclusively used a filing card system. An alphabetical and a
systematical (in subject order) catalogue exist. Non-Chinese books have been arranged
according to authors; Chinese books, which have been alphabetized according to the
Wade-Giles system, are sorted by titles.
Since 1992 we are using the same library software like the Regional Studies / China, and
we feed our data into a joint file. However, the old filing card system is being
maintained. Yet we had to change our transcription system from Wade-Giles to hanyu
pinyin after 1992. The filing cards are nevertheless arranged according to the
Wade-Giles system.
Today, we are proud of being able to offer a simple query on the joint files of the department of Regional Studies / China and the department of Sinology and Manchu Philology. Please follow the links to the homepage of the latter and click the Gopher button! We hope to be able to add the books of the Japanese department to this file soon. Help on the query is currently only available in German, but you should be able to figure it out anyways.
